Managers should show visible support for health and safety, and emphasize safety as a company value. Strategies managers can use to foster a culture of workplace health and safety include:
  • discuss health and safety at staff meetings
  • attend and participate in safety committee meetings
  • ensure adequate resources for health and safety
  • create trusting relationships with employees to encourage disclosure of injuries, near misses, issues and recommendations
  • suspend work activities that cannot be performed safely
  • follow best practices in due diligence by ensuring all employees receive high-quality and job-appropriate safety training, not simply the minimum standards

The role of front-line supervisors

Front-line supervisors can take active role in promoting and a culture of injury prevention on a daily basis through activities such as:

  • ensure employees have appropriate health and safety training
  • conduct documented safety inspections at pre-assigned intervals

  • bonuses and promotions for employees and managers can be affected by safety performance

  • progressive discipline – up to full dismissal – should be used, to the extent allowed, for those who violate safety work rules, perform unsafe practices or otherwise fail to meet safety responsibilities.
