Ontario Regulation 1101 covers the requirements for first aid in Ontario

First Aid Stations

It may be surprising to learn that there are several requirements for first aid kits under Ontario Regulation 1101 (O.Reg 1101). These include requirements for first aid stations, kit supply minimums, and first aid rooms.

First Aid Stations: A first aid station is like an information hub, supply closet, and records archive all in one. That’s not to say this powerful little spot takes up much space at all. A first aid station includes:

A posted list of all certified first-aiders
A copy of form 82
Inspection cards with dates and sign-offs for kit inspections
The stocked first aid kit
A log of all incidents requiring first aid

Under O.Reg 1101, the contents vary depending on the number of employees you have who are present during any one shift.

Trained First Aiders

The required first aid training depends on the number of people working per shift at a workplace.

For workplaces with five or fewer people working on any one shift, at least one must have an emergency first aid certificate. This program is 6.5 hours long.
For workplaces with six or more people working on any shift, at least one must have a standard first aid certificate. This program is 13 hours long.

Did You Know… All businesses covered by the Workplace Safety and Insurance Act (WSIB) are required to have first aid equipment, facilities, and trained personnel in all workplaces?

First Aid Training Requirements

Training

All first aid training in Ontario must be delivered by a WSIB-approved training provider. There are currently no approved online first aid training courses.

Did You Know....

It is recommended to have your Joint Health and Safety Committee (JHSC) members first aid certified

The JHSC and First Aid

Because the JHSC has a foundational knowledge of health and safety theories and processes, it is recommended that all JHSC members be first aid certified.

Employee members are also spokespeople for the staff, and workers often approach JHSC members when they need help. Be sure that your JHSC is prepared to handle any situation by providing first aid training.
