Do you need help building your safety culture?
Every organization has a safety culture. If your organization’s safety culture isn’t where it needs to be, don’t worry! You can build, strengthen, and change safety culture.
What is Safety Culture?
Safety culture is a broad concept that is usually taken to reflect the qualities of the organizational culture that affect safety attitudes and behaviours. Simply put, it’s the “way things are done.” When the safety culture is strong, the people within the organization view safety as both an individual responsibility and an integral part of operations. Attitudes toward safety are also a major component of safety culture. So, what happens when the way people view safety needs to change? What happens when there’s a “not my responsibility” attitude? If you don’t feel that your safety culture is where it needs to be, there are ways to build it up. Need help building your safety culture? We offer consulting services. Your safety culture is an important part of keeping workers motivated to work safely
Building Safety Culture
If your safety culture needs strengthening, you can implement strategies to help build it. However, these strategies aren’t just great for building a strong safety culture. They’re also important strategies for maintaining a strong safety culture once you have one established!
Strategy 1: Top-Down SupportWhen you practice and support safety at all levels, buy-in from workers comes naturally because safety is ingrained in all of the company’s operations and processes.
|
Strategy 2: CommunicationCommunicate all safety messages organization-wide. Ensure that all employees receive training on safe operating processes, policies, and procedures. Be sure to keep the safety board up-to-date as well.
|
Strategy 3: TrainingProvide training to employees regularly and monitor for effectiveness.
|
Strategy 4: Reporting CultureWelcome, rather than discourage, hazard reports. The employer, CEO, and managers can support reporting further by taking action to control or remedy reported hazards immediately.
|
Strategy 5: Involve workersBuy-in and participation increase tremendously when workers have input into workplace safety processes, policies, and program elements.
|
Strategy 6: An Active JHSCTo get an accurate read on an organization’s safety culture, examine the Joint Health and Safety Committee (JHSC). Is it active and effective? If so, you can bet that the safety culture is strong and that the JHSC gets the support it needs to run like a well-oiled machine.
