Get the most of out a slow summer by investing in employee health and safety training
For most organizations, summer represents a slower time. Many workers take vacation, production and orders slow, and in some industries, the heat forces reduced hours. Many employers do not think about training during the summer months. However, there are many benefits to completing health and safety training in the summer!

Did you know that your employees can still complete health and safety training this summer while working safely from home?
Benefit 1: Maximizing Shut Down Time
Summer shutdowns are common. Companies choose to shut down operations fully or partially for a variety of reasons, such as:
|
Summer shutdown is an excellent time to consider getting employees’ training updated. Since production is already halted, there won’t be any further disruptions to the schedule. As well, it allows employees an opportunity to recoup some of the wages they may lose during a shutdown, without having to complete physically demanding work in a hot environment. Training during a shutdown period also increases workers’ willingness to focus on training. That’s because they don’t have to worry about how their absence is affecting the production line while they’re in the classroom. Lastly, if training can be supplemented by demonstrations, the machines aren’t in use! They’re willing and waiting to become part of the hands-on training experience.

Benefit 2: Reduced Class SizesMany employees choose to use their vacation during the summer months, and why not? The kids are home, it’s sunny and warm, and it’s the perfect time for BBQs, zoo trips, and beach days. So, it seems counter-intuitive to plan training during the months that most employees will be off. But they won’t be off all summer. So, plan to have two or three sessions for each course. Workers can attend training when they’re at work. Since not everyone will be cramming into one session, training during summer helps keep class sizes manageable, especially when social distancing is required in classrooms. Even if the training is virtual, the few attendees in a zoom class, the more interactive and personalized the training will be.
|
Benefit 3: ComplianceFor many organizations, September through to the new year often represents a busy period. Trying to squeeze in training when demand is high is challenging to say the least and can impact production and revenue. Completing training during summer ensures that all employees are compliant and have all required training in place leading into the busy season.
