Optics: How is the JHSC viewed by their peers in the workplace? Do the workers know who is on the JHSC, and to whom they can talk about workplace safety? If the workers the JHSC serves see them as valuable providers of safety leadership, that’s a good indication that your JHSC is operating effectively. 
Top-Down Commitment: An effective JHSC will include management members that practice what they preach. Spend some time observing how the management members carry out their daily work. If they show a strong commitment to safety, you can be sure that they’re providing strong and effective safety leadership on the JHSC, too. 
By the Numbers: Not all evidence of effectiveness is anecdotal. Numbers tell a story, and there is plenty of data readily available that can tell a story about the JHSC’s effectiveness. For example:
 
  • How many incidences or near misses did you have this year as compared to previous years?
  • How many times did workers require first-aid on the job?
  • Have the lost-time hours increased or decreased year after year?
  • How many recommendations did the JHSC make this year? Of those, how many were implemented?
  • How many hours did JHSC members spend on safety-related activities?
  • How many training hours and dollars did your organization invest in JHSC training last year? How many hours and dollars did they invest in all health and safety training?

When workers are happy, healthy, and productive, they are more apt to drive the business toward its goal. Having an effective JHSC in place also has a positive impact on your organization’s safety culture, which is invaluable.
